Behind Tetouan and the summits of the Rif, close to a charming seaside resort, the Royal Golf Club of Cabo Negro is the site of a remarkable nine hole course conceived according to the purest British tradition by Haw tree & Sons. The round begins in front of a promontory surmounted by a white tower.
This course is 18 holes of luxury. The front 9 which runs by the seaside is tight with strategic bunkers and mainly straight fairways The fairways of the first two holes can well afford to be broad and generous, for their greens are stoutly defended by dense shrubbery. And on number three the 180 yeard par 3 you must be careful of the dunes, the flowers and the water! Number five, a superb par 5 on the side of a hill, is crossed by a stream. Revised by Cabell B. Robinson, it terminates on an undulating green. The ninth brings a return to tradition among the agaves and the mimosas
The back 9 opens out into full view of the Rif mountains which is truly spectacular and there are some great holes. The great thing is though that there is no one on this course - we spotted about 4 people on the whole round in the middle of August. You have to have a caddy and it helps if you speak french otherwise you're down to hand gestures. The greens are in very good nick and so are the fairways but some of the approaches are very tight, which is a good test. It's a very well kept course and a real hidden gem.
There is a pleasant clubhouse with a large thatched roof set in the shade of a mimosa tree, in time this site will become a perfect sporting holiday destination - Dr Hansdev Patel
